Across Five Decades Photographing the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race
Richard Bennett has now brought the whole glorious story together in a single large-format volume. His words and images give us both a bird’s eye view and a behind-the-scenes account of the defining moments in this blue-water classic. It also tells the story of how an avid adventurer became one of the world’s most identifiable and celebrated yacht race photographers.
This collector’s edition art book is presented in a strong clamshell case that measures 430 x 430mm including 110 pages and weighs a formidable 6.7 kg. The edition is limited to just 170 numbered and signed copies – the same number of boats that competed in the 75th anniversary race. It includes more than 70 of Bennett’s favourite and best-known photographs including the best images from that race. Hand-crafted from the highest quality materials, it can also include one image of a particular yacht from any year. In that sense, each copy could legitimately be described as ‘unique.’ The price: $4995 is not, in my opinion excessive. Indeed, I think it represents extraordinary value. As a rare book, its value can only increase. It is and will remain a volume of intrinsic historic interest.

Recently I was extremely fortunate to review Richard Bennett's new book "Across Five Decades", this book is a collection of Richard's last 47 years taking his amazing photographs of the great Sydney - Hobart Yacht Race. The book is an absolute masterpiece that is beautifully presented in a bound cover and individually made to order. The limited edition will certainly become a collectors item, with the ability to include at least one photo of your yacht plus others from this year's 75th Race will also make this book special. Congratulations Richard on this brilliant book.

Richard’s pictures of ocean racing yachts always depict the mood of the sea scape surrounding them and so capture the emotions of moment of the sailors aboard them. “The harder it blows, the happier I am,” he says.

Richard’s association with the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race spans ‘Across Five Decades’ and he has personally hand crafted this book to display his history with the race, including rare insights as to how his involvement started with the race in the 1970’s, various experiences he and his family have had with the race and viewing the magnificent images that Richard has printed on the finest quality paper to produce this extraordinary book. Reading the book is a memorable experience, firstly removing the book from its beautiful box with inlaid title, opening the first few pages with suspense and then admiring the unique method in which Richard has shared his experiences and images.
‘Across Five Decades’ proves that Richard is one of the finest photographers in Australia showing an eye for the ocean, coastline, yachts and finally the crews who sail to Hobart every year.
