Indulgence (1983)
A fresh nor’easter was blowing down the east coast.
The British Southern Cross Cup team boat Indulgence broached and broke two very expensive titanium spinnaker poles. Then she did a Chinese gybe, where the upper section of the mainsail went across the boat and filled, while the lower section and boom remained on the original side.
The incident and the resulting photographs were published around the world and influenced the decision to measure the righting moment of Sydney Hobart yachts. The crew bought copies too!
